Everything we need to know about tattoo removal

1 December, 2023 / words by Alicia Lartey

Everyone has deep regrets, but not everyone experiences these regrets in the form of a tattoo that they absolutely cannot stand. Luckily, technology has caught up with our regrets in the form of laser tattoo removal. But this is an aesthetic process that people often do not want to talk about, because it is somehow taboo to regret a tattoo and go to the lengths of getting it removed. You do not have to look at your tattoos in disgust, you can simply get them removed now! What this removal process looks like depends on each person, but these steps can vary per person.

What is laser tattoo removal?

When seeking a tattoo removal, the most commonly used and most effective method tends to be Laser tattoo removal. Which uses beams of light to break down tattoo ink into small particles that can then be transported out of the body via your immune system. This process takes a while and requires quite a few sessions of laser removal to achieve the desired result.
The speed of this process also depends on the size of the tattoo, the colour of the ink and the location of the tattoo on the body.

How many sessions do you need?

Most people require six to eight sessions of tattoo removal depending on the laser used, with some lasers such as the PicoWay laser which can make the process a lot speedier.

Does laser tattoo removal hurt?

Laser tattoo removal is known to be particularly uncomfortable, but this pain varies from person to person. The good thing about laser tattoo removal is that you can only expect your session to last a few minutes. During the process itself, your laser machine will be attached to a cooling airflow device to prevent the skin from becoming too warm. Some people cannot stand the pain of tattoo removal and may require the use of numbing cream or over-the-counter painkillers.

Can laser hair removal be performed on all skin tones?

Not so long ago, laser tattoo removal was not an option for people with deeper skin. Thankfully due to advancements in technology lasers are now suitable for dark skin and can remove tattoos effectively without causing damage to the surrounding skin. It is always worth checking in with your perspective laser tech to see if they have experience dealing with deeper skin or if the place you are about to choose actually has a laser that can accommodate for deeper skin.

Where can you get laser tattoo removal?

Laser removal can be found at some tattoo studios or at aesthetic clinics that specialise in laser hair removal. If you are feeling shy about removing your tattoo, it may be worth visiting a laser clinic to avoid judgement from another tattoo artist.
