How to maintain your hair’s health whilst using hot tools

3 October, 2023 / words by Diane Tuffuoh

When applying heat to your luscious tresses it temporarily changes the natural shape of each strand. Our hair is composed of a protein called Keratin and its structure can be altered at high temperature. This happens as the heat rearranges the proteins by breaking the hydrogen bonds between them. Excessive heat can lead to weakening of these bonds causing hair to have heat damage characterised by brittleness, split ends, and loss of curl definition.

Due to the unique structure of curly hair, the twists and turns of the hair shaft make it challenging for natural oils to travel from the scalp to the ends. This is why it’s even more important to protect your hair to maintain its health when using hot tools.

Protective Measures

Pre-Heat Prep: Start your heat styling journey with clean and well-moisturised hair. Use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner to ensure your curls are properly hydrated before applying any heat.

Heat Protectant: This step is crucial for preserving curly hair health. Apply a heat protectant spray, serum, or cream to shield your curls from direct heat. Focus on distributing the product evenly to cover all strands.

Diffuser Attachment: When blow-drying curly hair, opt for a diffuser attachment. This accessory disperses the airflow, minimizing frizz and preserving your natural curl pattern.

Lower Heat Settings: Choose the lowest effective heat setting on your styling tools. High temperatures can lead to heat damage and disrupt its natural structure.
Cool Down Period: After styling, allow your hair to cool down before manipulating it further. This helps set the style and reduces the risk of heat damage.

Remedies for Heat-Damaged Curly Hair

Moisture Restoration: Curly hair thrives on moisture. Invest in deep conditioning treatments that focus on replenishing lost hydration. Look for products containing ingredients like shea butter, aloe vera, and glycerin.

Bond repair products: Use products such as Olaplex and K18 that help repair and restore your hairs protein bonds.

Protein Balance: Balance is key when it comes to protein treatments. Too much protein can make your hair stiff, so use treatments with caution. Seek professional advice if you’re unsure.

Leave-In Conditioner: Incorporate a leave-in conditioner into your routine to provide continuous hydration and protect your curls from environmental stressors.
Regular Trims: Regular trims are essential for removing split ends and preventing further damage from traveling up the hair shaft.
