How best to manage eczema flare ups

27 November, 2023 / words by Alicia Lartey

It has finally reached that season where your skin has become susceptible to dryness and skin barrier damage which means that eczema flare-ups are definitely on the rise. Eczema is a chronic inflammatory condition that can result in dry, flakey, discoloured or textured skin.

The severity of your eczema will dictate the type of skin treatment that you are able to use and whether you will need medical intervention. I have been unfortunate enough to experience an eczema flare-up on my arm and leg this season which means I will also be following these tips. With eczema prone skin, you have to make sure the area is thoroughly cleansed and soothed to prevent further cracking. Some of the best ingredients to use during an eczema flare-up are colloidal oatmeal, licorice root extract and urea. Gone are the days of having to use uncomfortable ointments that leave you looking greasy.

One of my favourite moisturisers to use during an eczema flare-up is the SVR XERIAL 10 Rich Body Lotion for Flakey Skin. This product contains 10% pure urea, to exfoliate the skin and also hydrate severely dry and cracked areas. From personal use and from the brand themselves I can guarantee that I felt hydrated for at least 48 hours. Although this moisturiser is on the thicker side, it is best applied to slightly damp skin and warmed up in the hands before applied onto the body. An additional benefit of using urea based products is that it helps to smooth over KP (strawberry skin) and slightly improve the appearance of pigmentation. For the best results, I recommend using this moisturiser at least once a day.
