Destinations to visit if your New Year’s resolution is to travel more

6 December, 2023 / words by Nancy Lova

2024 is round the corner and as this year nearly comes to an end, we start to think about our resolutions and all the exciting things we want to experience in the new year. Whether it’s joining a class or picking up a hobby, we all have personal goals we promise to follow through but one that seems to be quite common is to travel. As time goes on, many of us start to realise that the single best thing we can gift ourselves is to see the world so whether you’re a first time solo traveller or just want to increase the amount of trips you take, I’ll list the destinations to visit if your New Year’s resolution is to travel more.

Barcelona

Starting off with Barcelona, delicious food, great weather, relaxed vibes, the city has it all and is perfect for those wanting to ease their way into a year of travelling more. Much of the old town and various districts can be explored by foot as they’re in close proximity making this an ideal destination for anyone looking to take frequent shorter vacations, preferably on weekends. Renowned for culture, creativity and Art Nouveau such as Gaudi, Barcelona is one of Europe’s most trendiest cities. Catalan architecture such as La Sagrada Familia, Casa Battló and Park Güell all act as magnets attracting travellers each month to view the works of art in person. There is so much to see and do here and all are easy to navigate through, which is no wonder why Barcelona is a favourite destination for many.

Rome

Ah Rome, known as the eternal city due to its ancient history, Rome is a place bursting with unparalleled history, incredible archaeological sites and charismatic piazzas and people all over the world travel here to take in the vibrant scenes and impressive monuments.
Well-preserved ruins, iconic landmarks such as the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum and unbelievable churches, all of Rome is a UNESCO World Heritage Site meaning you won’t be short of things to see. No need to worry about getting around or overcoming complex transport systems as the city is perfect in size with the majority of attractions able to be seen on foot.

Phuket

While we all love a quick getaway, sometimes we need more time to reset and explore a place completely unlike anywhere we’ve ever been to before. So go further afield and go to Phuket! Long has Thailand been a first choice for people visiting Southeast Asia for the first time particularly those wanting to travel more and often, Phuket is the go-to. World-class beaches are the main reasons to visit the island. Fluffy white sands with turquoise waters, Phuket is a tropical paradise and every traveller’s dream.
Brimming with culture, not only will you be enjoying the sights but you’ll get to learn about the history and tradition of the island too through locals, cuisines and activities. If you’re more of a party-goer however then there’s a huge range of bars and clubs to choose from as Phuket is known for having buzzing night scenes.

Paris

Another super easy city to get to especially if coming from London via the Eurostar. Paris is an enchanting place, steeped in gorgeous monuments and dazzling boulevards, many eagerly travel here year after year in order to view its charm and tick off the bucket list. Admire art at the Louvre Museum, watch the Moulin Rouge Show with a glass of champagne and be in awe as the Eiffel Tower glitters at night, Paris is a city of magic. If you’re a lover of pastries, coffee and shopping then you’ll feel right at home as cafe culture and sophisticated boutiques are prominent here. My favourite spots to visit include Café de Flore for hot chocolate, L’Entrecôte for the famous steak and chips and Galeries Lafayette Haussmann for the ultimate shopping experience.

Dubrovnik

A historical walled city and another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Dubrovnik is absolutely beautiful. Explore top attractions like the Old Town for gems such as Sponza Palace and Church of St. Blaise. Take a ride in a cable car for breathtaking views overlooking the crystal-clear sea and Elaphiti Islands and soak up the sun at Banje Beach, one of the most popular in Dubrovnik and is frequently the cover of postcards for Croatia! So calling all beach lovers, this one’s for you! With natural scenery, Mediterranean climate and marvellous beaches, it’s by no coincidence Dubrovnik is described as ‘the pearl of the Adriatic’
