Baecation, friendcation, a family vacation, sometimes a girl needs a ‘selfcation’ and go on a solo trip abroad.
I myself have always been quite impulsive and have had the urge to visit new places with or without people, and in recent years I’ve been blessed to make a career out of my travels. I personally think there is nothing sexier than a woman stepping out of her comfort zone alone, and doing the things people usually do with company such as travelling. I’ve put together a list of wonderful cities based on my experiences that are great for women travelling on their own.
Valencia
a place that meets all your travelling needs
From architecture and landmarks to beaches and rooftop bars, Valencia has it all.
It’s Spain’s third-largest city and in my eyes, it’s still somewhat underrated. But you know what? That’s not bad! I love going to places where the chances of me bumping into people I know are slim!
I stayed in central Valencia, close to Plaza del Ayuntamiento, which is one of the main squares. I was surrounded by fine architecture, and was within walking distance of some great landmarks as well fabulous restaurants and bars. I suggest visiting Haus San Vicente for the yummiest paella and the Ateneo Sky Bar Restaurant for dreamy rooftop views across the city.
If you’re a beach babe then stay along Malvarrosa or Las Arenas Beach for sun, sea, and sand. Valencia has about three miles of unspoilt beaches, and I don’t mean pebbles or seaweed. I mean a long stretch of soft, golden sand to soak up the sun to your heart’s content. For a slice of boujieness that’s totally “on brand” with the lifestyle, visit the popular Marina Beach Club which has a chilled atmosphere of water beds, sun lounges, an infinity pool, and an all-day DJ.
Venice
because this city shouldn’t be reserved until you meet your soul mate.
I adore romantic getaways but I’m also a fan of self-love trips and pouring back into myself. I’ve been guilty in the past of waiting for “Mr Right” to visit the most romantic places for the first time but single or taken, Venice makes an incredible destination for solo travel.
Stay three to four days close to St Mark’s Basilica and you’ll be a stone’s throw away from pretty much everywhere. Start off with a coffee, breakfast, or a spot of people watching in Piazza San Marco.
Admire the art and Venetian history at Doge’s Palace and Museo Correr, and at sunset, grab some gelato and stroll through the charming narrow streets of Venice. Stop off at one of the many restaurants by the Grand Canal and enjoy a delicious Italian lasagna with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc or fresh gnocchi with homemade pesto.
Be sure to head up to the roof terrace of St Mark’s Basilica for breathtaking views before finishing off your trip with a boat tour via the traditional gondola boat. Or if you’re after something more fast and fancy, hop on the motoscafi.
Athens
for ancient history and mouthwatering food
Sometimes it’s my taste buds that have me craving a little solo trip. Athens is a wonderful place to visit for a true taste of Greece and with plenty of melt-in-your-mouth dishes to try, the food alone makes Athens worth the visit. I had tears of joy after trying out Hoocut, an Athenian restaurant in the heart of the city. I experienced their famous souvlaki, a traditional greek food consisting of deliciously marinated grilled meat, fresh herbs and vegetables accompanied by a warm, freshly baked pitta.
As well as great food, Athens is practically a museum in itself, oozing with ancient history, with major landmarks within walking distance from each other. Its structure alone makes it an easy place to visit solo. Some great sites to see are the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Plaka and Parthenon. Wear comfy shoes though as you’ll defo be getting those steps in!
Milan
for the most luxurious 48 hours of your life
Tight for time? Or want something short and sweet for your first solo trip? Then 48 hours in Milan is perfect. A weekend escape at Galleria Vik Milano offers an elegant stay in the heart of the city. As you’ll find yourself in the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II shopping arcade, you’ll be spoilt for choice with all the high-end stores. Stroll around the corner to admire Duomo di Milano, (Milan Cathedral) and for cocktails overlooking the Piazza at Terrazza Aperol.
Udaipur, India
for soul searching and pushing boundaries
This is for the girls who want to test their limits and go the extra mile. (I mean literally, it’s a nine-hour flight!)
I’ll be honest, I visited with an ex but we were on such bad terms, I spent the majority of the time alone. It was basically a solo trip and ironically, the best trip I’ve ever had. Udaipur is known as the Venice of the East or the City of Lakes. From the vibrant colours and mouth-watering food, to the wholesome people and their spirituality, this is a great place for soul searching Huns looking towards a big change.
Engulfed by rolling hills, tranquil waters, and marble temples, I stayed within a true example of Indian luxury, The Leela Palace Hotel nestled perfectly along Lake Pichola. I had a blissful experience of massages, Rajasthani folk music and dance, cocktails by the pool and five-star Indian dining overlooking the lake.
To soak up the rich culture, I hopped into tuk-tuks and visited the enchanting City Palace and Jagdish Temple, and even shopped around for jewellery and home accessories.
Tip: Take an evening boat ride across the lake to the Oberoi Udaivilas for a magical Rajasthani meal accompanied by traditional folk music. Allow yourself to feel comfortable by asking your hotel to arrange transport and guides if you’d like a little helping hand.
Solo travel is good for the soul as it awakens a friend within, so even at least once, I suggest all women to give it a go.
