3 places to travel to for a scenic Christmas break

17 October, 2023 / words by Nancy Lova

Christmas is fast approaching and whilst many of us will be getting in the mood through decorating, gift shopping and joyful movies, some places take the holiday season very seriously and are worth the visit if you’re looking to truly get into the festive spirit. In this article, I’ll name 3 of the best places to travel to for a picture-perfect Christmas Experience.

Copenhagen

Starting off with one of the happiest countries in the world, Denmark. Known for great vibes all year round, tourists often travel here throughout the 365 days but it’s the capital, Copenhagen, where the Christmassy magic happens. Visit the famous and historic Tivoli Gardens where you’ll meet Santa Claus and his elves and wander through a winter wonderland bursting with over a million glittering lights, thousands of baubles and snow covered trees everywhere you turn.

Here you’ll find a cosy Christmas market with twinkling stalls offering everything from hot drinks and traditional Danish treats to leather goods and holiday memorabilia to take away. It’s not just tasty snacks and gifts you’ll be coming here for but the amusement park too. There are plenty of fun and exciting rides to enjoy and family shows to watch. I’ve spent a Christmas in Copenhagen before and it is definitely one of the most mesmerising cities to be in for the festivities.

Lapland

Oh how special Lapland is. If you’re in search of the kind of scenes you see on the front of Christmas cards or straight from a jolly fairytale then Lapland is a must. A heart-warming atmosphere of Santa and his reindeers, a magical forest with endless fluffy, white snow, huskies, igloos and even an elf school. Christmas doesn’t get more scenic than this.

A popular attraction here is Santa Claus Village in Rovaniem located in the Arctic Circle. At Santa Claus Village you can go on sleigh rides with his crew, take pictures with Santa himself, warm up in the cosy log cabins and if you’re lucky, encounter the natural phenomena that is the Northern Lights. There’s something to do for all ages as Lapland is the home of Christmas and gifts its guests an unforgettable visit.

Singapore

Enjoy Christmas but Singapore style! The country already is an incredibly scenic place no matter the time of year but things get even more spectacular during the holidays. It’s the perfect destination if you crave a warmer climate, no snow but all the joys that come with the festive season such as lights, celebrations and great food.

Kick start the fun at Capitol and CHIJMES where you and the family can join in on Secret Santa hunts, listen to carols at The Capitol Kempinski’s Singing Tree and shop at the Christmas Market along the open plaza. Indulge in dining like no other with a specially festive curated lavish spread at Raffles or at Shangri-La Hotel providing guests an enchanting feast with authentic flavours.

Christmas here is incomplete without seeing the holiday lights at Marina Bay Sands, a visual spectacle filled with a floating Christmas forest, hundreds of lights and giant snow globes and if you’ll be staying to welcome in the new year then you’ll get to marvel over the Marina Bay Countdown. A colourful explosion of fireworks and theatrical performances lighting up the skyline.
