I’m not sure if it’s just me, but even though the holiday festivities haven’t fully started, I’m already feeling a little overwhelmed. Between holiday parties, events, gift lists, catch-ups with friends you haven’t seen, and everything in between… My God, it’s a lot! It’s like everything is traveling at a million miles per hour without the consideration that we’re still living through a pandemic (let’s not even get into it)! During this season especially, we all try to do too many things for others, and somehow it becomes easy to put our own “self-care” on the back seat. It’s like you don’t even notice it, but weeks will pass by and it’s only then that you’ll realise that you actually haven’t had a moment for and with yourself.
Because of this, I wanted to share with you a few mindful ways and practical tips that you can implement this holiday season when finding the time to take care of yourself. After all, ‘You can’t pour from an empty cup’!
MORNING ROUTINE: You know I love a good routine, but implementing a routine that works for you before you actually start your day can change how your day runs. You’ll be clearer, and more intentional about the choices you make, not to mention that it’ll result in you being more centered. So it’s important to take some time out – whatever that looks like for you. Be it 30 minutes or an hour, just sit with yourself and enjoy your rituals. Whether that is drinking a cup of coffee or tea, reading, meditating, working out, or journaling. Use this personal time to prepare for the day in ways that feed your body, mind, and soul.
SAY NO: Friendly reminder that is ok to say “no” and it’s definitely ok to say “not anymore”. This time of the year is filled with so many plans (many of which we don’t want to do) and it’s important to remind yourself that you don’t have to do it all. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, or maybe something has changed and you’re not up for it anymore, just say no. Be honest, be clear and be kind to the person receiving your message. Don’t feel guilty for choosing yourself! All you can control is the decisions you make and hope that the person on the other side will empathise and respect your choice and even if they don’t, your boundaries are your boundaries.
READ AND GO FOR WALKS: As busy as it is, this is also the perfect time to switch off from your phone and really be present. Whether you’re spending the holidays with your family, friends or by yourself. Carve the time to read a good book; read something that inspires you, or even just something that you’ve been meaning to read for a while. Get that physical copy and read! Go on walks and surround yourself in nature, (the longer the better), make it a group thing, or make it a YOU thing! Being in nature truly has the power to ground you and calm you down.
BE INTENTIONAL WITH YOUR CHOICES: The keyword for this time of year: INDULGE. Please do allow yourself to enjoy it all because it truly is a lifestyle! But be conscious and intentional with your choices throughout this period. I’m talking physically, mentally, financially, and emotionally. Watch which parts you’re allowing yourself to indulge more in and when you can, find and stick to a balance: make sure you’re taking enough time to rest, eat healthily where you can, or do some sort of physical activity. Also a quick reminder – leave that shopping basket and close the window! Don’t overspend if you don’t need to and if you are going to be impulsive, make sure to be as strategic as possible.
It truly is a lifestyle, so be sure to remind yourself of your intentions, and the life you want to create for yourself – no matter the season!
