Applying eyeshadow might look easy but there is a technique to getting your eye makeup on point. If you are learning how to apply eyeshadow for the first time, there are things you will need to consider such as your eye colour and skin tone. When done right, eye makeup can enhance your features and draw attention to your eyes. For beginners, this might sound like a lot to take in, but you can go from a novice to a pro as long as you have a few good tips and a willingness to experiment.

Use more than one eyeshadow brush
This will depend on the eye product you are using but most times, it’s always best to use different brushes for different shades. A small eyeshadow brush should be used for the transition colour and when using shimmery or bold shades, two different brushes should be used. I would recommend using three to four eyeshadow brushes to achieve the perfect result.
Apply eyeshadow before foundation
As a beginner, it’s always best to apply eyeshadow before foundation, especially if you are using glittery or highly-pigmented eyeshadows or loose pigments. Anything that is loose in texture should be used before applying foundation. When loose pigments are applied on bare skin, they can be cleaned off easily. If you apply a pigmented eyeshadow after foundation, you risk getting it stuck to your foundation and this can lead to excess fallout and potentially having to reapply your foundation.
Prime your eyelids
Using a primer before applying eyeshadow improves your skin’s texture, helping eye makeup go on smoother and ultimately lasting longer. Eyeshadow primers are great because they keep your eyeshadow in place and prevent it from creasing.
Start with a neutral base
Once you become a pro at applying eyeshadow, never forget to start with a neutral base to keep your eyeshadow in place. The creamy texture helps with application and extends the hold of your eyeshadow. It also neutralises the colour of your eyelids and accentuates the eyeshadow’’s colour.
Transition from light to dark shades
Your transition shade should always match your skin tone, this creates a beautiful finish between your eyes and the rest of your makeup. If you want to create a bold eye makeup look, then the transition shade should complement the colours from the look you are creating. If you aren’t sure about which transition shade is best, then go for a neutral shade from any eyeshadow palette.
Keep it natural at first
The most important tip of all is to go for natural tones when applying eyeshadow for the first time. Beige, bronze, brown and rose gold tones are the best shades for beginners. Once you feel confident enough experimenting with natural colours, you can move onto vibrant and daring looks. The great thing about natural tones is that they can work for any occasion and when applied correctly, your look will stand out.
