A good winter coat can stand you the test of time, or be a really big expensive mistake. Your coat is a statement in the winter, you’ll wear one pretty much every time you step outside so you want to not only look stylish, but make sure it suits your lifestyle too. Heading to work on a chilly morning, going for a Sunday walk, need a beautiful tailored coat to throw over a cocktail dress, whatever the occasion – we’ve got you covered (literally!).
Colour
The colour of your coat says a lot, you may want something that ‘goes with everything’ like a black or a grey. But don’t be afraid of a camel or brown – these are also timeless and will work through Autumn too. If you’re feeling more adventurous, a pop of colour never hurt anyone and greens, dark pinks, or even a wine red will guarantee your coat makes a statement.
Body shape
Your body shape will determine how the coat hangs and fits, especially if it doesn’t have a belt or is straight-cut. Belts really help to nip you in at the waist giving you that silhouette shape. If you’re planning on wearing it on top of a thicker outfit then don’t buy anything too fitted or try a size up.
Lifestyle
If you’re on the go a lot, you won’t want anything that takes ages to put on and take off. Consider the fastenings on the coat before buying, is it fiddly, or does it have just one zip or a few buttons to contend with. If you spend a lot of time driving, consider a short coat – they are far easier to squeeze into a car in.
Material
Probably the most important consideration. A classic winter coat will take you everywhere (or close to everywhere!). If you know you’re going to be outside a lot, try a wool or down filled coat, whereas if you spend a lot of time on the train or go between temperatures then a more breathable fabric might be best.
