The beginning of the colder months is upon us, and winter is fast approaching. The change in season, means a change in our beauty regime from our skin to our hair. The colder weather, lower humidity levels and indoor heating can impact the health and appearance of curls. The same way we must adapt our wardrobe to stay warm, is the same way we also need to switch up our hair routine, to keep our curls from becoming dry and brittle which can cause breakage, and we don’t want that. So, here’s a guide on how you can start preparing your curls, to be ready for the colder months.
MOISTURE IS ESSENTIAL
Keeping your curls moisturised is key. Curly hair is naturally drier and requires more hydration. Cold weather and indoor heating can intensify this dryness. For wash days, use a hydrating shampoo and an intensively moisturising conditioner. Include a hair mask or deep conditioner use a steamer or a heated cap for 20 minutes to allow the moisture to penetrate into the hair shafts. To keep your hair moisturised after your wash day, use either a hydrating mist and or a moisturiser every day and that should do the trick.
PROTECTIVE STYLING
Consider protective styles such as braids, twists, weave, or buns. This will minimise exposure to the colder weather and help trap moisture in your hair. Also, use quality hair accessories hun, like satin scrunchies and silk headbands to reduce friction and breakage.
AVOID HEAT STYLING
Reduce the use of heat styling tools as they can further dehydrate your hair. Instead opt for heatless curling tools and methods like braid or twist outs. If you do use heated tools, do your curls a favour and use a good heat protectant and use a lower heat setting than usual.
REGULAR TRIMS
Trimming your curls keeps your hair healthy and helps retain length. Schedule regular trims every 8 – 12 weeks to prevent split ends and breakage.
KEEP A HEALTHY DIET
Healthy hair can’t be based on products alone. Nourish your hair from the inside by maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals and protein.
STAY CONSISTENT
Consistency is key, so be sure to stick to a routine that works for you and your lifestyle. Your hair will thank you with luscious, soft, healthy hair during the winter weather.
