Monochrome can be so effective and stylish, if you get it right. If not, you run the risk of things looking a bit boring and plain.
Here’s a few things to bring the timeless chic of black and white to your home.
Balance is key
Black is a heavy, strong colour. Don’t make the mistake of going for 50 / 50. White walls and a lighter floor really help if you’re thinking of monochrome styling, then build with black accessories like statement chairs, vases and cushions. An ideal monochrome room will have no more than 30% – 40% black.
Textures are your friend
To avoid the room feeling a little flat and one-dimensional try adding a wooden table (lighter oaks work well) to add some warmth and depth. Black and white may seem restrictive, with only two colours to play with, so why not try contrasting materials instead. Jute, linen, wool, furs.
Get artistic
There are so many great prints out there. Take a wall and make a black and white gallery of interesting and bold prints. Or use black and white patterns on cushions, throws, vases and other interior accessories to give you a few pieces that catch the eye as soon as you walk into the room.
