Jewellery has the power to enhance your personal style and make a statement, but over time, daily wear and exposure to the many different elements can leave our favourite pieces looking a little lacklustre. But not to worry, Hun! With a bit of TLC, you can easily bring back the sparkle and shine to your fave pieces of jewellery. Here’s a short and sweet guide on how to clean your jewellery and keep it shining.
Before you start the cleaning process, make sure you have the right tools on hand. You’ll need a soft-bristle toothbrush, a microfiber or lint-free cloth, mild dish soap, and a bowl of warm water.
Begin by separating your jewellery into categories such as gold, silver, gemstones, and costume jewellery. Examine each piece for any loose stones or any damage that might need professional attention – you may want to leave those to s professional.
Soak and Soothe
For metal jewellery like gold or silver, create a gentle cleaning solution by mixing a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water. Soak your jewellery in this mixture for 15-20 minutes. This will really help to loosen dirt and oils that have accumulated in the crevices of your jewellery over time.
Brush Away that Grime
After soaking, use a soft-bristle toothbrush to gently scrub your jewellery. Pay extra attention to intricate details and crevices where dirt may be hiding. Be cautious not to use a brush with bristles that are too hard, as this can scratch delicate surfaces and we don’t need that! Once you’ve brushed away the grime, rinse your jewellery under cool running water to remove any soap residue.
Pat it dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid air-drying, as this can leave water spots.
You can give your metal jewellery an extra shine by using a jewellery polishing cloth. This will help remove any remaining tarnish and bring back its original lustre. For silver jewellery, consider investing in a silver polishing solution for added brilliance.
Prevention is key so store your jewellery in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity. Consider using individual pouches or compartments to prevent pieces from scratching against each other and try you best to take your pieces off before showering or washing your hands to prevent-build up.
